1/20/09- a step backward
I did not watch a single minute of the inauguration, none of the pomp and circumstance. It was my peaceful protest. I am really not excited for Barrack Hussein Obama to be president. I am sickened by all the hype over Obama being elected. I DON’T CARE THAT HE’S BLACK! How’s that for not being racist? I actually saw a children’s book with Obama’s face on the cover titled, “Son of Promise, Child of Hope.” WHAT?! Son of what promise? Child of Hope? Yeah, he’s young…so he is a child…but it’s not like he is the Messiah, and I think people are getting carried away, just a bit. It’s ironic that yesterday was Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I think the good Doctor would be torn about this whole event. For those who are still alive that faced segregation, who actually lived through those horrible times and were told that they were nothing because they were colored, who were called “boy,” who were abused while people looked the other way, I think today was a great day for you. I do. I understand the significance for you of having a black president. For the generations that came after, I think you got robbed. Dr. King said, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” I think we failed this way. If you put Obama’s credentials down on paper, he didn’t earn this. He is a one-term senator who barely voted on anything, and was consistently late to congressional hearings. He has no record. His only accomplishment is that he is the first Black President of the United States. It is affirmative action at its highest and its worst. I have nothing, nothing, nothing against having a black president. But I believe that it shouldn’t matter that he’s black. I believe that he only won because he is black. What does that say for us as a country? Some of us still can’t see past color. Just because prejudice has gone the other way doesn’t make it any less true and any less harmful. I didn’t need Obama to win to see how far our country has come. Every day I see inter-racial couples. I see black families in good neighborhoods. I see many many black people who have worked hard, who have earned everything they have, and I hold them in much higher regard than I do Obama. I know that we are doing better. I have been happy at our progress for a long time. I think we took a step backward when we elected a man because of the color of his skin. It saddens me. What does that teach the rising generation? I hope that something positive will come out of this. I hope that this will knock the crutch out from under those who have been using their pigmentation as an excuse to not succeed. Well, not anymore, because YOU CAN BE PRESIDENT! So, suck it up and earn what you get. (I was gonna apologize for the generalization, but it wasn’t one. If you aren’t using your color as a crutch then the comment does not apply to you, so you will only be offended by it if you do.)
During the time that George W. Bush was president there was plenty of hate and trash talk directed at his decisions and him personally. People wore shirts that said, “not my president,” among other things. Well, I am so grateful to live in a country where we are allowed to disagree. I am grateful that I can dislike the person elected to be president and not fear the secret police. I don’t like Obama. I don’t agree with most democrats on most issues. It’s not just him, but I think he represents some of the worst parts of the left extremists. You won’t catch me with a “Not my President” Obama shirt though. Because I am grateful for democracy. If Obama is the President of the United States of America, then for right now, he is my president. While I don’t feel like bigger government and more regulation will help this country, I don’t think we can afford to have him fail. I know so many who are hurting, and so, I will still pray for Obama. I will pray for him to not follow his agenda, but to address each problem individually and seek inspiration from whatever higher power he believes in. I believe that he will, just like Bush did, have many difficult decisions that we may not ever understand, and I know he will not be perfect. I just hope he has faith in the systems that have made our country so great. I have always been and will continue to be proud every day to belong to such a great nation.
An insight to what a geek I really am.
Ok, so for real, I sent this email to Rush Limbaugh. Laugh at me if you must. But I know only like three people actually read this, and those three people already love me, so here it is :
I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (AKA Mormon.) I was reading your transcript from today, about fighting for conservatism, and I couldn’t agree more. It got me thinking about a very similar story. Have you ever read the Book of Mormon? If not, let me tell you one of the stories. You are going to LOVE IT! There are two groups of people, warring societies if you will, called the Nephites and Lamanites. The Nephites are the good guys, and they have a system of judges with a chief judge for their judicial system, and more or less live in a democracy. Well, there is a man among the good guys who wants to be king, so he starts using flattering words, promising power and positions to those who lie, steal, murder for him, etc, in order to place himself on the throne. He creates a secret society, and they call themselves the Kingmen. Now, this might not be the worst thing ever, but right at that point in time the Lamanites are headed toward the Nephites with their armies. The Kingmen refuse to take up arms, even as the Lamanites begin attacking. They see this as an opportunity to further their agenda. Well, the leader of the Nephite army is Captain Moroni. He is a very cool dude. He sees the way these Kingmen are acting, and is just sick about it. He knows he has to do something about it, so he takes a piece of his clothing, makes it into kind of a flag, and writes on it, “In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children.” He fastens it upon the end of a pole, for all of his people to see, and calls it the Title of Liberty. Then he takes this from town to town and gathers all those who feel as he does and they get together and take down the Kingmen. He reminds the Kingmen of what they believe and even gives them an ultimatum that they can stand with him and fight against the Lamanites, in defense of all those things they hold to be true, or they can be put to death on the spot. Many of them choose death, and Captain Moroni quickly complies.
Doesn’t the leader of the Kingmen sound like Obama? Doesn’t he sound like he wants to be king and that he is setting up those who lied, cheated, and stole for him in powerful positions?. Not only that, but he’s willing to weaken our military in a time when we’re not very popular in the world. It just seems like his goal is to take away our freedom. And what can we do? We can’t do what Captain Moroni did and put him and his followers to death for treason, but people like you can remind us of what our country is about. That we don’t go looking for a fight, but that we will protect ourselves and our God-given rights. As I wrote this I thought of so many different stories in the Book of Mormon that are relevant to our situation now. Oh, you should read it, or at least have a Mormon tell you about the stories. You would love Moroni and King Benjamin. Anyway, I thought you should know that there are millions of people out here who recognize the similarities in the story and see Obama and his secret society for what it really is. Please hang our Conservative Title of Liberty somewhere for all to see.

It is the best of times, it is the worst of times.
I look at the headlines and see things about Cancer Genes being discovered and other technological breakthroughs, then I see a headline saying that Banning Gay marriage is a step backward. So, with technological advancements we regress in moral issues. This is such a funny concept to me because I have always believed there was Truth (with a capital t) meaning an absolute reality, unwavering for popular belief truth. During Pagan times it was the gods that controlled the weather, the crops, love, etc. Then we were enlightened and science explained it all, well maybe not the love thing so much. Why can’t others see the blend of the two, that God does exist, that He is an active player in this life and that he uses natural laws to govern the earth? There are laws of gravity, and other physical and chemical laws that hold our world/universe together. There ARE also laws, just as real, that God put in place to govern our societies. Why is that so hard to believe? Prop 8 just passed, and I am reading comments on articles and I am seeing ugliness on both sides. People for it saying “Go to Massachusetts, we don’t want you” and people against it saying, “you are ALL bigots, just you wait.” Such hate, such misunderstanding and refusal to look at issues from the other perspective. In a genuine, sincere love for others I understand why those who are gay would want to marry. I do. But I believe that the natural order of society, i.e. children being raised by a mother and father, would be horribly altered and that many of the minorities’ values would be enforced on me, even by law. That is why we live in a democracy. That is what makes us great. This is a difficult issue, that I don’t think any one person, or even a handful should decide. That is why we let the majority decide. And we did. It wasn’t to hurt anyone. It was to prevent future hurt of the majority. To me, God set up families to work with a male and a female (the whole making babies thing) and even though many heterosexuals aren’t honoring that either, I don’t see how it would help to further dishonor it. I am disgusted that Marriage isn’t as big of a deal for heterosexuals. It should mean more. If homosexuals are fighting this hard to get it, shouldn’t that tell you it’s not something taken lightly? I don’t believe in sex before marriage, I don’t believe in divorce (at least not taken so lightly, I don’t believe in staying in an abusive marriage either.) I also believe that we should all have the freedom to believe and say what we want in as much as it does not take away those rights from others. What can we do in a moralless society where everything is relative? There has to be some foundation of right and wrong. There has to be some Truth. Doesn’t that just make sense? How can we know so much and yet believe so little.

Drawing a line in the sand
Ok, so, in talking with some people I have found that some people are voting for Palin because she is a woman, a pretty woman, or Obama because he is black or because he is more attractive than McCain and is more well spoken. But really none of these are reasons to vote for someone. (duh, right?) Well, I think a good part of America isn’t as analytical about their decisions as they should be. We as a country should take this time between now and elections to define ourselves as individuals and our beliefs, whatever they may be. I am not saying believe what I believe (of course the world would be a better place) but I am saying pray to whatever higher power, meditate, read scientific studies…whatever you find foundation and truth in, and have a defined set of beliefs to base your decisions on. This will be helpful in more than elections but right now it will guide the direction the country will go in. If you need a little bit of help, how do you feel about: Government’s role in our everyday lives, taxes, welfare, who’s job it is to feed the hungry, accountability for personal decisions, a woman’s right to have an abortion, an infant’s right to live, our right to have guns, how much should minorities influence the majority’s freedom, how should we treat our resources/earth, how much should government be involved in our children’s education topic-wise, how much should government be involved in our ability to worship how we choose, healthcare, government studies verses private studies, how much should we as a country be involved in other country’s affairs, at what point should we intervene when there is a possible threat to our freedom, should we care if another country is suffering—these among other things are things to figure out. Find out what you believe, list them in order of importance, and then find who agrees with you on the things you feel matter most. Then vote for that person regardless of what they look like, what gender they are, etc. After all, isn’t our blindness to color and gender supposed to be one of our cherished attributes or at least one of our greatest goals? I say get over your prejudiceness of women, blacks and even the old white guys. So, draw a line in the sand for yourself and see who is on your side.

Gay doesn’t fit in science or theology.
Ok, so I am conservative, religious, and so I have been concerned and paying somewhat attention to this whole gay marriage thing in California. Ellen getting married doesn’t help because as a human being, I love Ellen, and I want her to be happy…but I don’t think it’s good for society. And I would risk her happiness for society’s well being. So I was thinking about it the other day and homosexuality doesn’t make sense if you are secular and scientific or if you are religious.
Any species that was homosexual, or mated with it’s own gender would soon die out. You need to be able to repopulate. If you are religious, at least if you are Christian, then the bible and religious leaders condemn homosexual activity. So…why is it so accepted, especially when it is such a minority? It must be that there is a gene that is tied to homosexuality and those attributes that lead to Hollywood stars, or maybe the Hollywood lifestyle leads to homosexual tendencies. Who knows.
I hope hope hope I don’t sound like a bigot because I really don’t consider myself one. I really love and respect other people, cultures etc. With that said, to me it is similar to black people being over-represented in commercials. You know, having a token black guy or guys in there, just so you’re not excluding anyone. But it doesn’t always hold true to the populations’ demographic. (Like I said, I have nothing against black people) It is also true of homosexuals/gays/lesbians whatever. There are not that many gay people in the United States for them to be in every group, like they are portrayed as being in the media. They are over represented and so we are risking major societal upheaval in the near future for a very small minority. It would not be good if the population of homosexuals grew as before mentioned, because we need to replenish our population. But giving the title of marriage and representing them as so common in the media normalizes an anomaly.
Ok, I am gonna probably offend a few people here, but I do not wish to. I wish to express a point of view. I have talked to a few gay people about being gay. One guy asked me, “how would you feel if you never got to touch a guy, even though that’s what you’re attracted to.” Well, it would suck. Another person told me, “It’s not my fault, I never chose to be gay. When did you decide you liked guys?” Yeah, true, I just am attracted to guys. Now, here comes the hard part. Brace yourself. Pedophiles are people who are attracted to children. Sometimes it’s due to abuse and sometimes it is just the way they are. At what point do we draw the line? They didn’t choose to be attracted to children. They didn’t choose to be abused. They don’t get to touch who they are attracted to. Not fair? What if we called them Pedosexual? Would that make it ok?
I think it is a difficult thing to be attracted to a type of person you aren’t “supposed” to be. That is a trial. So 2% of the population doesn’t get to have the title “married.” You know, I know people in wheelchairs who will never get to be married, who will never get to be intimate with the opposite sex. It is a part of life. It sucks, but that doesn’t make a person’s actions socially responsible or moral because it would be “unfair.”
Love and Logic Magic
I just read Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood. I would recommend the book to any parent who is still doing any sort of parenting. While many of the methods wouldn’t really work on a teenager (I think they have a book for teens anyways) the basic principles are true and still apply. There is one part that reminds me that God is the perfect parent. He lets us struggle because that is how we learn. There are two different kinds of parents that it talks about, the helicopter parent who hovers over their children and make sure they don’t get hurt or fail or think…and then there is the dictator who tells their children everything they should do and think down to the minute also not teaching them to think. Little struggles while they are young teach great lessons…most of all it teaches our kids to learn, to think for themselves and figure things out.
First Sunday Post
Sunday is my Sabbath, and so I plan my posts to be a bit more serious and appropriate for my Sabbath Day worship. This is the first and I decided that the true meaning of Christmas would be a good topic. It is difficult with all of the sales and all of the things that I would love to get for my children to remember what Christmas really is all about. We give each other gifts to remind us of God’s gift to us, He gave us His only begotten son. I struggle to not only keep my spending in check but find a way to truly honor the meaning of Christmas and teach it to my children. I don’t want my kids to look forward to Christmas because they feel they are due toys. I even have a hard time with the idea of getting my older son excited about Santa Claus because, that isn’t what it’s about…There are a few traditions that we are going to have that will hopefully bring the focus back to our gratitude to our Heavenly Father and for our Savior, but the thing we are going to do that hopefully will have the biggest effect is to talk of Christ and verbalize our praises to our God for the wonderful blessing of the atonement. With that, I just wanted to express my gratitude for my Savior, for the knowledge I have of His gift, how grateful I am to have children who remind me about what is important.
Cell phones at the park
One of my pet peeves is the negligent mothers/parents who take their kids to the park and spend the whole time either talking on the cell phone or engrossed in conversation with another parent, while their kid is on the other side of the park…which means that other parent is also not paying attention to their kid. Today I almost gave my kid whiplash stopping the swing because a little girl ran in front of it. Now I have two kids…very active, crazy boys, and I have had other parents help protect my kids and I have helped with others when it has become necessary…but it becomes annoying when I have to save their kid because they just don’t want to get off the phone (and their butt) more than to yell, “watch out or you’re gonna get kicked” after the fact.
I think it is important to remember the purpose of the park…which I realize varies by the stage your child is in. When they are toddlers it is a place for them to be able to play with other kids, to learn how to socialize…from you. You need to be the one telling them it’s not ok to throw sand or to take a toy away, not some other big person, and if possible you need to catch things before some other kid is crying. The park is a place for you to show your toddlers how to have fun, to learn new physical skills and be brave. They are very much in the stage of copying, and so you may need to go down the slide, or up the rock wall…show them! When they are going up that ladder or down that slide for the first little while, they need your encouragement and praise…which is hard to do when you aren’t paying attention. I of all people know that you need a break, you need to be able to socialize, but I think that that is better done in a controlled, familiar environment like your or your friends home.
Of course everything changes when your child gets older and has already learned that you don’t kick and throw sand etc. Not only do you not need to be a foot away at all times, you would get tired and they would get annoyed. Even so, with the amount of sickos out there able to abduct children, I will always be watching mine.
